Why Travel on Memorial Day

In less than a week, nearly 40 million people will travel all over the country in celebration of Memorial Day. However, amidst the heat of the summer sun, the smoke of the barbecue grills, and the glow of the exploding fireworks, the true meaning of Memorial Day has been somewhat lost. Memorial Day is more than just another day off school or another excuse to go to the beach: It is a day to celebrate and remember the men and women who have fought and sacrificed to defend our country, and it is our patriotic duty to use this day to honor them. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean you have to give up your celebrations – on the contrary, it is even more of a reason to go on new adventures and explore this glorious country we call home. Here are a few reasons why traveling is the best way to honor our troops without sacrificing your own day off.

Traveling makes you appreciate your home

Whenever you decide to leave home and explore new destinations, you are bound to get a little homesick. Even when you’re out having the time of your life exploring unseen locations and making irreplaceable memories, home is where the heart is, and you will soon come to love and appreciate the place you call home more than you ever thought possible. It is thanks to the military men and women putting their lives on the line every day that we get to enjoy the sweet comfort of home, and getting out and traveling is a great way to fully appreciate this precious gift.

Rather than spending Memorial Day in mourning, the American tradition is to celebrate the lives of the troops who fought and continue to fight so bravely to defend our home. A great way to do this is to get to know the country that they work so hard to defend. After all, men and women put their lives on the line each day to protect our country, so there must be something rather spectacular about it. The least we can do to honor them is get to know the country that they sacrificed so much to defend.

Take advantage of our country’s variety

While countries like The Bahamas have nothing but beaches to boast of and countries like Canada enjoy snow as far as the eye can see, The United States is unbelievably fortunate to have a wide variety of scenery for everyone’s travel preferences. Whether you prefer the scenic mountains of Beckley, WV; the relaxing, white-sand beaches of Myrtle Beach, SC; the history and culture of St. Augustine, FL; or the hustling and bustling of cities like Charlotte, NC, there is a perfect destination out there for everyone to explore. As Americans, we are unbelievably privileged to have access to such a wide variety of destinations, and we would be foolish not to take advantage of them. While some will argue that a lavish European vacation is the better choice, Memorial Day is a great time to remember that true beauty is right here at home.

If there was ever a time to get to know our nation, Memorial Day is it. On a holiday that incurs relatively less travel than other popular times of the year, many of the country’s most attractive summer destinations are offering promotions and deals to make your celebration more exciting than ever. Taking advantage of these offers is a great way to achieve the goal of learning more about our country on a holiday that celebrates those who fought to defend it.

Honoring and remembering those troops we’ve lost is what Memorial Day is all about. To all the military men and women out there, ViaAir thanks you for your service, and to those who have lost a loved one in the fight for freedom, our hearts are with you on this holiday and all other days.
